US Social Media Influencer Fined Following Large-Scale E-Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged negligent driving after a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on Tuesday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A group of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"This had potential for serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.

Law enforcement said they did not chase right away the riders out of safety concerns but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Content Creator

Later in the week, authorities announced they had served the American online personality known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a penalty of $562 and penalty points per notice, connected to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.

The personality reportedly has more than 3.4m followers on one platform and over 1.2 million on Instagram.

Influencer's Comments

The content creator spoke with a major newspaper this week following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a negative image.

"I accept the blame. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to abide by the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had a decision to make: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

National Debate on Electric Bike Rules

The increase of e-bikes on streets across the country has sparked growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, recently said that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We must ensure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] police are granted the authority to take strong action, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to dispose of them."

The state recorded over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in 2024. However, in the initial half of the following year, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
