UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
