The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.

Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.

“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”

This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
