It has been confirmed that fan-favorite actors Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their iconic roles in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The project is now in the works.

An Important Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, respectively. Industry whispers indicate their appearance will likely occur in a flash-forward sequence, as the original saga concluded with their characters living in peace.

This represents the sixth cinematic outing in the highly successful Hunger Games franchise.

Delving Into the Prequel

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a newly published work by series creator Suzanne Collins. It acts as the second film set before the original story after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Once again is Francis Lawrence, who directed the majority of the previous films in the series.

The Plot and New Cast

The film's story are set in the years leading up to the first Hunger Games, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, later known as Katniss's mentor, is featured as a tribute in the brutal 50th Hunger Games.

The film welcomes several prominent actors in pivotal roles:

• Jesse Plemons will portray Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes will appear as a younger version of the menacing President Snow.

Current Projects and Release Timeline

Separately, Jennifer Lawrence is receiving acclaim for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson recently appeared in the hit horror film Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the shoot:

1. Principal photography began in the summer of 2025.
2. Filming was completed in November of the same year.
