The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
