Ministers are planning to provide law enforcement new authorities to target ongoing protests, with a particular focus on taking action against Middle East protests, as stated by the Home Office.

Recent Detentions and Planned Changes

This declaration comes just after nearly 500 individuals were arrested in the capital for expressing support for a proscribed group, a prohibited entity. The new measures could allow authorities to order regular protests to be relocated to alternative locations.

Shabana Mahmood, will also examine all anti-protest laws, with the potential to strengthen authorities to ban some demonstrations outright.

Planned Legislative Modifications

As part of these measures, the Home Secretary will push through swift changes to the existing public order legislation, enabling police to consider the "combined effect" of repeated demonstrations. Specific details will be released "at a later date", according to the statement.

If a protest has caused what officials called "repeated disorder" at the identical site for several weeks, authorities would have the power to order protest leaders to relocate the event to another location, with those who fail to comply facing arrest.

Wider Review and Community Safety

The Home Secretary added that she would "also review existing legislation to guarantee that powers are sufficient and being consistently applied", including police powers to prohibit certain protests entirely.

"The freedom to demonstrate is a fundamental freedom in our country. Nevertheless, this freedom must be weighed with the freedom of other citizens to live their lives without fear," Mahmood said.

"Large, repeated protests can leave sections of our country, especially religious communities, experiencing insecurity, threatened and scared to leave their homes. This has been particularly evident in relation to the considerable fear within the Jewish community, which has been communicated with me on numerous instances during these recent difficult days."

"These measures represent an important step in guaranteeing we protect the freedom to demonstrate while making certain everyone feel secure in this nation."

Recent Situation and Police Reaction

The broader powers seem targeting both large-scale Gaza-support demonstrations, which took place in the capital and some other cities over a series of weeks, and those held to back Palestine Action.

On Saturday, police arrested about five hundred individuals at the latest similar demonstration. The event occurred despite ministers, including political leaders, requesting that it be delayed following this week's deadly attack on a Jewish place of worship in Manchester.

Law Enforcement Viewpoint

After Saturday's protest, the leader of the police representative body commented that officers policing protests in London were "drained both mentally and physically".

"This cannot continue. Our concentration should be on keeping people safe at a time when the country is on increased security from a terrorist attack. Yet police are being pulled away to facilitate these relentless protests," Paula Dodds said.

Further Legislative Measures

This development come after protest-related measures in the crime and policing bill currently under parliamentary consideration, which prohibits the possession of masks or pyrotechnics at demonstrations, and makes illegal the scaling of specific memorial structures.
