21st Minute: Fierce Play as Both Teams Compete
21st minute: The Broncos advance to halfway and nearly break through the defensive line through Walsh and Shibasaki on the left flank. A further superb kick from Adam Reynolds on the final play maintains the Broncos' pressure. Over three plays they remain on the front foot, but some quick passes release the rapid Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a six-again is awarded for holding down. The Storm are now in rhythm, and Warbrick breaks through the defense, followed by Coates making a dash – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder charge! Is that a sin-binning? Not according to the referee, rules Atkins, because Coates was buckling. Walsh is under review regardless, and the Storm resume their attack.
19 mins: Cameron Munster Directs Storm Attack
19th minute: Cameron Munster is busy as the Storm move quickly down to their attacking 30m line. Down the right, Jahrome Hughes lofts a kick, Katoa sprints forward, but in the aerial battle, the forward knocks on, and the Broncos finally get a respite.
18 mins: Melbourne Exert Pressure on Broncos
18 mins: Melbourne execute a textbook set from the kickoff and put plenty of force on Mariner with the last tackle kick. Again, the Brisbane struggle to advance the midfield in reply, and Adam Reynolds is compelled to kick long to stay in the game.
17 mins: Injury for Storm
17th minute: There's a setback for Melbourne. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin injury. Tyran Wishart is on in his position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 12-6 Broncos (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Brilliant, absolutely stunning. Following back-to-back restarts, the Broncos are flagging. From tackle three close to the line on the left side, Melbourne move the ball infield for a couple of passes before Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the charging Eliesa Katoa times his charge to perfection to dive on the loose ball and rise to celebrate his team’s second try!
From slightly right of the posts, Nick Meaney converts his second goal.
12th Minute: Melbourne Display Exciting Offense
12 mins: The Storm appear dynamic in offense. There’s speed from the play-the-ball, power from the forwards, and crisp hands from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a kick high to the left side that is dropped by Walsh and results in a penalty to the Melbourne for an escort on Coates. The Storm reject the penalty goal and get to work near the goalposts. There’s a six again – and another – as Cameron Munster dances side to side.
10th Minute: Tense Action
10th minute: Stefano Utoikamanu has lived up to his word from the start and his run from the restart allows first Grant, then Papenhuyzen, to snipe from acting half. Hughes boots from 40 meters and Walsh catches the bomb on his 10m line. The Broncos carry reduced thrust this drive and get lucky on the last when Hunt’s pass to Adam Reynolds goes to ground. Fortunately, the experienced playmaker kicks superbly to force Xavier Coates to retreat and makes the Melbourne wing to run from his in-goal. The Broncos are too eager with their chase, catching the Queenslander high, and Melbourne can gain attacking field position.
CONVERTED TRY! Storm 6-6 Brisbane (Nick Meaney, 8)
From the scrum, Stefano Utoikamanu drives hard to the 20-meter line. Next, from quick ball from the play-the-ball, all of Melbourne’s big names handle the ball as they catch and pass out to the right edge until Nick Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at high speed, and breaks through a flimsy defensive line to dive over for an immediate response!
Meaney recovers to kick the goal. It's a tied game!
7 mins: Both Sides Trade Sets
7th minute: Both sides trade cautious plays either side of halfway, but then the Broncos look to expand on their left side, only to be unable to hit Shibasaki with the ball. Warbrick rushes up and earns a knock on for his efforts.
5th Minute: Ideal Opening for Brisbane
5 mins: That is the absolute dream start for Brisbane, scoring first before the Storm have even touched the ball, in an offensive play led by both Haas and Walsh. The Melbourne might be somewhat frustrated at the referee awarding such an quick infringement, but they were soundly opened by the blistering Broncos attack.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 0-6 Broncos (Deine Mariner, 3)
Following a long kick, Brisbane begin their attack. Storm give away a six-again for offside, and quickly the ball is in the danger area. Where is Walsh? Waiting on the right edge, attracting Jack Howarth, standing his ground, then someway offloading to Deine Mariner on his wing. The outside back steps inside, reaches the line, then just, only just stays in the field of play as he runs around to touchdown under the posts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the goal, but the video official upholds the on-field decision. Accor Stadium is rocking to the sound of ecstatic Queenslanders.
2 mins: Quick Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Haas, takes the first hit-up of the match and the Storm are up sharply… but just three tackles later the Storm give away the first penalty of the game for Harry Grant impeding Haas on the floor. The Broncos right away in offensive mode.
