Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and look forward observing their progress".

Summers, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

The economist occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that the economist was not connected with the group.
