Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and look forward observing their progress".

Summers, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted the economist's choice to depart.

Legislative Background

This news follows after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a bill that would compel the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.

The legislation will afterward head to the office of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his base.

A batch of financier-linked correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to link the academic to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

The economist occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, verified that the economist was not connected with the group.

Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its top executive the company leader.
