Child of Former South African President Jacob Zuma Rejects Terrorism Charges as Court Case Commences
The child of former South African Leader Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over comments she posted on social media in the past during violent unrest in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.
A period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, caused at least 300 dead and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been accused of inciting this unrest and confronts charges of provocation to commit terror acts and public violence.
Context of the Legal Matter
The unrest were centered in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's detention for defying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was serving as president.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always refuted the accusations against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the state's evidence as insufficient.
She has also repeatedly said the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political disputes with her dad after he founded his own political party and ran against the ruling party.
Support and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and kinship persecution" against the former president and his kin.
A handful of supporters from her party, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is insufficient and lacks compelling proof for a conviction.
Central Elements of the Case
- Online statements from four years ago form the foundation of the prosecution's case
- Deadly unrest in July 2021 resulted in major casualties and economic destruction
- The defendant is charged with multiple counts of encouragement to unrest
- Legal proceedings are expected to continue for numerous weeks
The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their arguments before the court in what is projected to be a carefully observed legal battle with major politically charged consequences for South Africa.
