Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Alerts Across Multiple States

This situation come after recent bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have also been activated for the coming days in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, bringing intense heat to a broad swath of the region.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken heat presents a dangerous situation for firefighters.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Cause Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was left in darkness recently after strong winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused major transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is expected to cause further problems as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a region known for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Snow to Tourist Islands

And in Spain, a powerful storm has brought intense rainfall, powerful winds and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at higher ground, the system delivered some of the heaviest snow depths in 2016 to a national park, compelling its closure.

Alongside the snow, strong northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph observed on several locations. The effect of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions taking hold.
