At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Gangs
No less than 64 people died in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.
Four police officers were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near the city's international airport is seen as the central command of a major illegal networks.
State officials said at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

The Red Command group has been growing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Rio's police said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, along with numerous weapons.
