Adult Swim's Leading New Show of 2025 Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
